- Description:
- A standing figure cuts threads into a conical form with the aid of an early screw-cutting lathe. The lathe is has a large wooden frame that seems occupt most of the space in the room. The figure uses a rope attached to a weight and strung through a pulley to turn a shaft that transfers the motion through a cords on either end of the shaft to turn the work. Below the worked piece, a cutting tool is held in place. Spare cutting tools are strewn on the floor. An example of a large rod with threads cut into it hangs from the wall. The text on the original plate in Besson reads "Tertium torni genus, subtilitate non carens, ad insculpendam pedetentim cochleam cuiusuis formae, in ambitum cuiuscunquae figarae rotunda et solidae, vel etiam ovalis". This roughly translates to "A third kind of lathe, not lacking in precision, for engraving a screw of any shape, round and solid, or even oval, in the circumference".
