- Description:
- The earrings worn by the children are likely Kenyah in origin. The hut can also be identified as Kenyah due to the leaves used in its construction. Broad leaves are planted and cultivated for many uses, such as the wrapping of rice and the construction of roofs.

- Notes:
- Garen describes a different hut in his community center, which has a slanted base for blood circulation (due to the lack of pillows). The first pit of the hut contains two "chopsticks," "one for fire, one for food." The more layers a hut has, the better (and presumably more skillful) the husband is perceived to be as he is able to catch more food for his family. The Penan hunt wild boar, deer, and rhino mostly for their horns, which they can trade with, but can eat meat as well. The man sleeps where the hut intersects with the path to protect his family. If a boy is over 15 years old, he takes over this role by sleeping on the outermost side of the hut. Garen prefers to sleep near the fire pit, which contains specific wood that burns easily, to avoid mosquitoes. The Penan dislike dirty places and will move if the hut is dirty, sometimes even within a day of moving into the hut.
