- Description:
- The photograph depicts an Eastern Penan family of four: a man, woman, and their two children. The man is holding a bag used to store matches and other valuables for the family, such as medicine. Next to it is another bag holding poison for a blowpipe (Tabó). The bush knife he carries is an sign of wealth (the longer the better), while the container on his waist--a Tekék--is important for keeping fire stones and thus is usually carried by men. These families rarely travel far from their homes as the men and women carry large bags and babies, respectively.
