- Description:
- The photograph can be dated to the nomadic period after World War II as the Penan acquired clothing through trade, the likes of which would not have been possible during the war as the Penan had to hide in the jungle and wear bark. The people can be identified as Eastern Penan due to the selungan bracelets they are wearing, which are not worn by the Western Penan. Western Penan people will also sport tattoos and smoke, unlike their Eastern Penan counterparts. The bubut (rattan baskets) containing resin and are made from sago branches. The dogs were used for hunting, which was mostly carried out by men. The beaded belt worn by the woman is called a Bitung, while her cloth headband is known as a Paka, worn exclusively by women. The earrings are called Samahah and can be round or circular. Bituk were used to elongate one's earlobes.
