Long Lamai

Penan woman
- Description:
- The woman pictured in the photograph is Lerroy Lemen's grandmother, who was the first midwife in Long Lamai and who passed away in Long Lamai in 2014. She was trained by the government in the 1960s, during the transition period, and was a cousin of Franklin George's grandmother (they had the same father, but different mothers). She was also a cousin of Garen Jengan's late mother, Marta Belait. People sought advice from her even in her old age.

The first missionary group entered Borneo in 1929 in an attempt to change the beliefs of native Borneans who believed in omens, nature, birds and paganism. These missionaries met the Penan, including Wilson Bian Belare's grandfather, during the Tamu, and taught them about religion. In order for them to learn from the missionaries, the Penan moved into settlements, with some of them learning how to read. In the 1940s, there were only seven families who had chosen a life of settlement, including Wilson's late grandfather (although his parents only settled in 1947). Although he attempted to convince other Penan to settle and cultivate crops, most only began to settle in 1956, with the period from 1945 to the 1950s known as the transition period. By the late 1950s, however, everyone had settled.
